Sensory Cutting; Fall Leaves Outdoors

We took our cutting work outside today. We first foraged for leaves and plants (weeds we could take) then went back home and dumped them into our outside sensory table and cut them up! It was awesome! There were so many different textures and everything was different to cut. We both had a lot of fun!

I'm not one to use flash cards in a traditional sense. But when I saw these Playskool colors and numbers flash cards for a dollar I knew I would get some use out of them - and I was right!

This pack includes 36 cards. Two of each color and two of each shape. This makes for a memory match game!

I was excited to see some geometric solids included, too!

Flashcards are great for color and shape sorting.

What started as a fall sensory basket has turned into a fun color sorting activity! In it we have acorns, a pinecone, artificial leaves (some with autumn sight words written on them), foam pumpkins, pipe cleaners, string, and an adorable little mouse we purchased here. But you can use anything you've got! Just mix up a bunch of loose parts and throw in the corresponding cards!

The shape sorting work. I wanted to work on differentiating similar shapes (next I'll be doing circle and oval). To make this multi sensorial I included cards on stock paper with real life objects and seperated them from shapes I cut out of paper, fabric, cardboard, and that I found; the domino and square tangram piece, I'll be sharing the real object cards once I've created them for every shape.

More shape sorting but this one is with play dough! Use cookie cutters to cut each shape, then match it to the corresponding card.

This is all I've got for now but keep an eye on this post - I'll be adding more uses for flash cards as I make them!

How do you use your flash cards?

I made these basic shape pre writing work sheets that include real object comparisons for three or four year olds. I recommend laminating these for use with dry erase markers. You can laminate them double sided to save money!

Fall and Halloween themed poetry tracing work that builds both writing and reading skills!  I recommend laminating these for use with dry erase markers! I recommend this for five year olds or later fours.

Our three year old, Ezzie, is currently perfecting counting from one through five. I made him a Halloween counting activity using flies from the dollar store and he loves it! The flies can hang out in the web when they're not being used.

Make sure you use the exact number of flies so the work will be self corrective! Just print and laminate if you'd like!

If you don't want to pick up the flies I made some fly counters that can be cut out and used instead!

Of course, this isn't just for Halloween, spiders are always fun. I hope you and your children enjoy this work as much as we do!

DIY Fine Motor Montessori Activities at low to no cost

 Blog: Racheous

A great collection of fine motor activities for younger children - many of which are free!

I was especially happy to see these stencils (links to amazon) which are so much cheaper than the Montessori metal insets I had actually planned on buying!

Go check out Rachel's other activities as well! There's lots of work you can recreate for toddlers to five year olds! I also love her Homeschooling Co-Op section where she has a fantastic list of group activities!

Rachel also made a very helpful infographic about "What makes an activity Montessori" (posted below).
